The first Céline boutique was set up in Paris in 1945. Celine Vipiana with her husband
Robert had founded a children's shoemaker shop that is why initially the Fashion house
had a name Céline, le bottier pour enfants.
Little by little the assortment was widened by
women's footwear and accessories. At the end of 50's a bag made of the pony leather and
moccasins were at the peak of popularity. In 1964, the first perfume was added to the
assortment which became quite close to the modern one.
Céline always called her production «things made for a woman by a woman» so apart from
elegant and exquisite clothes, she created clothing for spots and relax. For instance, thanks
to her pants-skirts have become extremely popular. In the 70's Céline boutiques were
opened all around the world — in Monte Carlo, Rome, Lausanne, Geneva, Hong Kong and
Toronto. In 1975, the vintage Céline trench coat was created, it is still one of the most
popular models. the symbol of feminity and elegance.
At the end of the 90's the brand was merged in LVMH group and the post of creative
director was taken by Michael Kors who started producing collections for men. It was him
who made Celine bags iconic. In 2008 Phoebe Philo took over Kors — her style is laconic,
authentic, and high-quality. Spring-summer 2018 is the last season for Philo in Celine, the
new creative director is Hedi Slimane. For sure he will follow the triumphal lead and will
keep brand's principles: puff clothing, straight silhouettes and experiments with cuttings,
textures, and proportions.
