The brand which is world's fashion heritage was founded by a French couturier
Pierre Balmain in 1946. After the war, he set up his own dress-making studio where he
was creating luxury evening dresses: a tight whalebone bodice, a plenty of decorations
and dozens of meters of fabric.
After longstanding war deprivations, such a style was
highly sought and supported by cinema stars like Vivien Leigh and Marlene Dietrich.
Pierre Balmain was among the first to develop the silhouette which was later
popularized by Christian Dior: a slim waist and a bouffant skirt; he also was the first who
started to create couture sets: necklets, cloaks, coats, capes, or palatines combined with
dresses, and at the end of 50's he brought cocktail dresses into vogue. Since the 60's
luxury style had started to become irrelevant this is why the results of the 80's and the
90's were unsatisfying despite the fact that Oscar de la Renta was at the post of creative
director.
In 2005, the Fashion house got a second wind with Christophe Decarnin as a creative
director: it was the time when fancy jacket with massive shoulders, sparkles, and rivets
became his signature. Since 2011 the head of the brand is Olivier Rousteing who was an
assistant of Decarnin before. That was him who made the brand extremely popular,
among celebrities including — the collections' hits are worn by almost everyone, from
Rihanna to Kendall Jenner. Olivier Rousteing finally turned once a conservative house
into a brand for contemporary confident women in keeping with its French traditions
yet putting the accent on urban chic in characteristically catchy manner. At present,
BALMAIN is a young, daring, popular among the interjetic audience brand which is still a
symbol of luxury and prestige.
